More than 30,000 educators are protesting the Los Angeles school district’s overcrowded classrooms and low salaries. The fight is revealing rifts among Democrats and progressives.
Arne Duncan, President Barack Obama’s education secretary is expressing support for the school district. Sen. Bernie Sanders stands firmly on the side of the educators, and has supported other teachers’ strikes in recent months.
Duncan’s position is indicative of establishment Democrats’ harmful alignment with corporate interests. Democratic teachers’ unions are finding themselves supported mainly by progressives.
