“I think the very definition of the deep state is when the intelligence communities withhold information from Congress..." so says outspoken US Republican Rand Paul.
Paul was upset when he and his Senate colleagues weren't invited to a briefing, from CIA chief Gina Haspel, concerning the killing of Saudi reporter Jamal Khashoggi.
“There are eight people in Congress who get briefings on intelligence,” a forthright Paul said. “That is not democracy. That is not democratic representation nor is it democratic oversight.”
